Joe Biden Wants to Lift Work Visa Restrictions

Joe Biden promises to lift H-1B restrictions when winning elections

The US’ presidential elections get closer and closer

The US presidential election will take place in November, 2020. The two main candidates so far are current President Donald Trump (who is seeking re-election), belonging to the Republican political party, and former Vice President Joe Biden (during Barack Obama’s term), belonging to the Democratic political party.

The views of the two strongest candidates regarding immigration in the US are very different.

On the one hand, since President Trump took office in 2017, he has worked tirelessly to reduce immigration in the country, both legal and illegal. The president argues that mass immigration is an unnecessary burden on the country’s economic system and affects the local population, reducing job opportunities and using public benefits.

On the other hand, Democratic nominee Joe Biden believes that the US is made up primarily of the foreign workforce and the government should strive to offer benefits to immigrants that constantly drive the country’s socio-economic development.

In fact, in one of our most recent articles, we discussed possible changes in the immigration sector if Joe Biden wins the presidential election.

The current restrictions of Trump’s government

The current administration of the US recently announced new restrictions on the immigration sector. This time the restrictions are aimed at work visas offered to specialized foreigners.

The US Citizenship and Immigration Service (USCIS) cannot issue new work visas for the remainder of the year.

President Trump argues that this emergency measure will protect American workers, reduce the current unemployment rate and propel the economy out of the crisis caused by the pandemic.

However, this restriction sparked much controversy among immigrant rights advocates and local businessmen who disagree with this measure and argue that the US market will suffer from a shortage of skilled labor.

Biden wants to remove this restriction

On June 30, 2020, at a public conference, candidate Joe Biden promised to lift the restrictions on work visas (H-1B) if he wins the presidential election in November.

The Democratic nominee argues that market sectors such as technology, research and medicine are being tremendously affected by this restriction and local competitiveness will have a strong impact if this presidential decision is not reversed.

Biden openly stated: “An immigration system that crowds out high-skilled workers in favour of only entry level wages and skills threatens American innovation and competitiveness”.

Aside from work visas, Biden also mentioned his point of view regarding immigration in general and the reform he plans to propose if he wins the presidential election.

He stated: “My immigration policy is built around keeping families together, modernising an immigration system by keeping families, unification and diversity as pillars of our immigration system, which it used to be”.
