Judge orders release of immigrants from ICE detention center
Judge orders release of immigrants
It was finally the time for immigrants in detention centers and prisons to receive good news from the US government.
Detained immigrants are usually people who tried to cross the borders illegally and are now asking a review for their cases to legally reside in the country.
There are also thousands of detained immigrants who want to seek asylum in the US. Sometimes, they are entire families waiting for an answer for their residency application.
They are taken to immigration detention centers or prisons around the country, depending on the specific case and space availability.
The number of people trying to cross the border illegally is usually very high, however, with the outbreak of the Coronavirus, the daily numbers have dropped considerably. In fact, the calculated percentage is almost 80% in reduction of illegal immigration.
Therefore, thousands of immigrants have been captured in the last few months and that makes government facilities overcrowded, which implies a very high risk of contagion.
Since the Coronavirus arrived in the country, several immigrant rights advocates have demanded the danger that innocent families are facing in centers that do not have enough medical supplies to withstand a massive contagion in their facilities.
Fortunately, a US federal judge responded in favor of immigrants and declared on April 7, 2020, that the Immigration and Customs Enforcement Service MUST release four immigrants who are vulnerable to the virus.
This means that all people suffering from a chronic disease or who are elderly could be released as soon as possible from the facilities of the country’s immigration centers and prisons. This depends on whether more judges join the cause and help the most vulnerable people.
A San Francisco public defender stated: “It is unfortunate we had to resort to the courts for this relief; ICE should be doing this on its own.”
ICE has been judged in recent weeks because it cannot offer security to detainees, nor to federal employees who have served the country faithfully for years.
This is hopeful news for all detainees who are afraid of catching the virus while in detention centers.
The decision to release immigrants in danger of contagion is a step that should have been taken a long time ago, since the virus arrived in the country, however, the government took a long time to grant this request because current immigration policies are very strict and have been classified as “arbitrary” on several occasions.
This decision opens many doors for human rights to be respected and for immigrants to have decent conditions while awaiting the response to their residence requests.
This is the right time to move forward with immigration processes and for immigrants to have more opportunities to reside legally in the US.
It is a very positive aspect for the country’s economic structure that immigrants work legally because they are one of the pillars of small and medium-sized companies that promote economic growth.
It has been proven on several occasions that immigrants help the socioeconomic development of the country and inspire thousands of people to be entrepreneurs and generate more income and job opportunities.
