Lawmakers Ask the Biden Government to Add More Hispanic Members
The Biden administration’s vision on immigration
President-elect Joe Biden, who belongs to the Democratic political party, will take office in January 2021 and has shown great commitment to repair the current immigration system and restructure or revoke policies implemented by the Trump administration.
It is important to clarify that the current president of the US, Donald Trump, has used all the tools at his disposal to reduce and curb immigration in general. On the one hand, his administration has built a border wall that separates the US from Mexico to curb illegal immigration and has implemented official rules and orders that also restrict legal immigration processes.
Therefore, since Biden has a different view on immigration and plans to increase benefits and alternatives for the most vulnerable immigrant communities and highly skilled foreign workers, his administration will initially have to reverse Trump’s policies and use his team to restructure protocols of federal agencies related to the immigration sector such as ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement), USCIS (US Citizenship and Immigration Services) and CBP (Customs and Border Protection), which are branches of the DHS (Department of Homeland Security).
In order to meet this goal, Biden’s cabinet or government officials must understand and support the purposes of his administration when it comes to the immigration sector. For instance, Biden announced in late November that Alejandro Mayorkas will be the Secretary of DHS, who is the first Latino, from an immigrant family, to fill this role in the US.
Congressional Hispanic Caucus asks Biden to add more Hispanics to his cabinet
Since Biden was elected by local citizens as the 46th president of the US, the Congressional Hispanic Caucus has asked Biden to add more Hispanic members to his cabinet and congratulated him on the appointment of Mayorkas to lead DHS.
It is important to understand that the Congressional Hispanic Caucus is a group of 30-35 members of Congress, mostly belonging to the Democratic political party, who protect and fight for the rights of Hispanic and Latino communities in the US.
They ask the Biden government to add more Hispanic members to his team, who could occupy an important position such as:
- US Attorney General.
- Secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS).
Biden has already received two letters, signed by 32 members of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, one on November 29 and the other on December 2, urging his government to consider other Hispanic members in order to restructure the local immigration system and put a new direction in American history and multicultural inclusion.
