Lawmakers Call on Congress to Protect ‘Documented Dreamers’
Lawmakers send letter to Congress to protect ‘Documented Dreamers’
On Monday, August 9, 2021, a group of more than 20 lawmakers sent a letter to several congressional leaders, asking to open a path to citizenship for young immigrants known as Documented Dreamers.
Who are the ‘Documented Dreamers’?
The term Documented Dreamers refers to young immigrants who have lived in the US under the sponsorship of their parents, who are usually work visa holders, allowing them to bring their immediate family members from abroad to be their dependents.
However, when these young immigrants turn 21, their parents’ visas no longer protect them and they are left in limbo, specially because they have no specially designed pathway to obtain their own legal documentation. In fact, there are currently more than 200,000 Documented Dreamers on the Green Card waiting list, which can take years and many of them reach the age of majority even before they receive this benefit.
What are the lawmakers’ arguments?
Since Documented Dreamers are children of foreign workers and usually also become an essential part of the local workforce, lawmakers are asking Congress to help these young immigrants obtain legal documentation in the US without having to go through almost endless bureaucratic hurdles.
They are asking to include Documented Dreamers in the 2022 budget reconciliation package that the Biden administration plans to introduce soon for congressional review. The lawmakers state that young immigrants known as Dreamers, both those who came to the country without legal documentation as minors and those who have been dependent on their parents for many years, are absolutely essential to boost the national economy and keep local businesses afloat.

This is not the first time such a proposal has come to light
It is worth mentioning that, in late June 2021, a well-known and influential group of lawmakers sent a letter to DHS (Department of Homeland Security), more specifically to DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, asking for some sort of guarantees for the future of Documented Dreamers, who, in their vast majority, came to the US as children and do not remember anything about their countries of origin.
In this letter, the lawmakers asked DHS to either:
- Offer a path to legalization for these young immigrants.
- Expand DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals) to also protect Documented Dreamers.
At this point it is important to explain that DACA is the only option available to young immigrants who came to the country as minors, known as Dreamers. This program protects them from deportation for two years with the possibility of extension.
However, this immigration benefit was recently suspended by a Texas judge and does not offer protection to Documented Dreamers.
