Letter to the Government Regarding COVID-19 Travel Restrictions
Travel restrictions related to the global pandemic
After more than a year in which the world has faced one of the most devastating health crises in the recent history of mankind, we are now perceiving and experiencing the aftermath of the global Coronavirus pandemic, which affected not only the health sector of most, if not all, countries, but also brought an economic, social and in some cases political crisis.
Speaking specifically about international transit, something that is usually common thanks to technology, the flow of foreigners dropped dramatically across the world in 2020, especially in countries with high immigration rates such as the US.
Adding to that, not only did the sanitary emergency pause international transit, but local governments also increased travel restrictions in the midst of the health crisis, a move that served to reduce contagions.
In the case of the US, former President Trump already wanted to reduce immigration levels in general and the global pandemic undoubtedly contributed to his administration implementing restrictive policies and suspending the issuance of most visas, including those available to highly qualified foreign nationals.
In fact, the Trump administration paused immigration almost entirely, affecting local employers who need and rely heavily on the presence of foreign workers to meet market demands.

Researchers ask to lift travel restrictions to welcome qualified foreigners
In early August 2021, a group of researchers (both immigrants and non-immigrants) sent an open letter to the current administration of the US, led by President Joe Biden, asking to lift certain travel restrictions related to the global Coronavirus pandemic.
The researchers state that the travel restrictions are delaying or even hindering the entry of postdoctoral personnel into the US. It is important to explain that the term “postdoc” usually refers to short-term research work in fields such as science, technology and engineering.
Therefore, researchers ask the Biden administration to create exceptions for postdoctoral professionals to come to the US, and they explain that the contribution of these brilliant foreigners is absolutely essential to boost research areas in times of crisis.
They state that scientific interest should be a priority for the federal government in a world as competitive as ours. Aside from that, they state that it is unfair how certain foreign students can enter the country without restrictions, but other postdoctoral students are still subject to travel restrictions.
