Massachusetts Raises Its Voice for Immigrant Communities
Immigrant communities are going through a difficult time
Due to the massive outbreak of Coronavirus in the US, multiple immigrant communities are going through a difficult time as immigration policies have changed considerably in recent months.
Some of the difficulties immigrants are currently facing are:
- Political asylum applications are not currently available, therefore, immigrants who arrive at the borders with the intention of requesting asylum, must remain in Mexico under the Migrant Protection Protocol (MPP), commonly known as “Remain in Mexico”.
Therefore, they are not currently allowed to enter the US.
- The US government decided to issue “stimulus checks” during the health crisis, which are basically monetary aid to alleviate unemployment and boost the economy.
President Trump declares that no immigrant without legal documentation, even if they pay the mandatory annual taxes, should receive this government aid during the current situation.
However, each state has the right to distribute these checks as they please. For example, the state of California decided to deliver this monetary aid to undocumented immigrants. - If immigrants are detained trying to cross the borders illegally, in most cases, they no longer have the possibility to go to an immigration detention center and appeal their cases, but are deported almost immediately. That is the protocol allowed during the global Coronavirus pandemic.
- Work visa applications for qualified foreigners are not available until 2021.
- Green card applications from abroad are also not available until 2021.
However, despite the current restrictions implemented by the Trump government, there is still hope for immigrants.

Massachusetts helps immigrants
The Massachusetts committee is working on a bill to protect immigrants residing there during the current juncture.
This state plans to protect the personal information of undocumented immigrants and thus be able to counter the impact of the harsh policies of Trump’s administration.
The Massachusetts Committee on Homeland Security and Public Safety are working together to propose the new bill.
This project seeks to prevent court employees and police members from giving personal information about undocumented immigrants living in this state to agents of border forces such as the Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency (ICE) or the Customs and Border Protection (CBP).
In this way, Massachusetts seeks to protect the integrity of immigrants and prevent them from deportation in the midst of a global pandemic.
The main reason why this state wants to create this bill is because immigrant communities that fear deportation may refrain from using medical services during the health crisis.
This could make them possible carriers of the virus or die unnecessarily for fear of deportation. That could also spark another wave of a massive Coronavirus outbreak in the state.
Therefore, Massachusetts wants immigrants, even if they do not have legal documentation, to use medical services during the current juncture.
