Group of mayors urges Biden to lift border restrictions

A group of mayors is urging the Biden administration to lift border restrictions related to the global pandemic, especially the so-called Title 42, which, broadly speaking, allows immigration officials to expel undocumented foreigners aprehended in border territory almost immediately, in a matter of hours and without following regular protocols.

Mayors state that these border restrictions are affecting their economy, which is highly dependent on the flow of immigrants into the border territory, and call on the Biden administration to act as soon as possible to protect the national economic stability.

For instance, the mayor of Brownsville, Texas, openly stated that “If the government does not want to lift those restrictions, they need to provide a compelling reason why”. Other mayors also argue that they do not understand why the Biden administration has upheld these restrictions if the country has access to COVID-19 vaccines and contagion rates have dropped considerably.
