Mexico is an important nation to handle irregular migration

AMLO asks the US for help to curb irregular migration

On Thursday, August 26th, the President of Mexico openly asked the current administration of the US, with President Joe Biden leading the way, to assist the Central American territory in order to improve local conditions and curb irregular migration to North America.

AMLO’s proposal is to invest in certain vulnerable territories such as El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras, also known as the Northern Triangle of Central America, to effectively address corruption and violence, and to provide a better quality of life for local citizens, which could prevent them from migrating in caravans to the US.

AMLO stated, “We are seeking investment so there is development, so there are jobs and well-being in Central American countries, so the people are not forced to emigrate (…) A social problem cannot be solved only with coercive measures.”

It is important to mention that one of the Mexican president’s emphasis was the fact that both the US and other nations have not humanely confronted irregular migration and that this is the reason why there have not been lasting positive changes.

These comments by President AMLO come after the Supreme Court ordered the Biden administration to reimplement the MPP (Migrant Protection Protocols) policy, which forces thousands of asylum seekers to remain in Mexico for a considerable period of time.
