Mexican President Celebrates Biden’s Decision on the Border Wall
The border wall to curb illegal immigration
One of the proposals of former President Trump that caught the attention of the American public was his ideal of building a border wall as a main strategy to curb irregular immigration from Central America.
The former president promised to build a border wall, or rather finish it, that separates the US from Mexico to prevent the massive flow of undocumented foreigners across the borders and help federal entities such as CBP (Customs and Border Protection) or ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) to fulfill their duties and reduce illegal immigration at all costs.
In the Trump administration’s view, the border wall was a clear signal for immigrant communities not to cross the US’ borders without prior authorization. Aside from the border wall, the Trump government increased deportations, allowed “expedited or express removals” amid the global health crisis, and decreased alternatives available to undocumented immigrants.
In addition to that, his government expedited the construction of the border wall after the US’ most recent presidential elections, which took place on November 3, 2020.

President Biden halts border wall construction
Despite former President Trump seeking re-election, Democratic candidate Joe Biden, who was vice president during Barack Obama’s term, took the victory. Biden took office on January 20, 2021, and regarding immigration, his stance differs almost completely from Trump’s.
For instance, President Biden disagrees with building a border wall to curb illegal immigration as it is a costly and ineffective investment. Adding to that, he states that there are many other viable alternatives that could be efficient in reducing immigration from Central America and would not affect the border ecosystems.
Thus, as one of his first actions in office, President Biden halted the construction of the border wall and ordered his team to evaluate the possibility of renegotiating contracts already funded by Trump.
