Mexican Restrictions Increase Pressure on the Biden Administration
Trump deported thousands of migrants to Mexico
Under the Donald Trump administration (2017-2021), the US experienced a substantial reduction in immigration, from processes based on employment or study, to humanitarian programs for vulnerable populations. This is because one of the previous administration’s priorities was to restrict immigration at all costs, arguing that the massive influx of foreigners can become a burden on the economy, taxpayers and the federal government.
However, despite the Trump administration implementing restrictive border policies, there are other factors inherent in the Central American territory that constantly force thousands of people to migrate to the US.
Therefore, to curb the flow of immigrants in the country, former President Trump deported hundreds of thousands of foreigners to Mexico under different policies and agreements, with the approval of this country.
Current Mexican restrictions regarding deportations from the US
After several years of receiving thousands of deportees from the US, even in the midst of the global Coronavirus pandemic, the Mexican government recently implemented several restrictions that ban local authorities from receiving certain migrants at the borders.
For instance, in November 2020, Mexico stated that it would no longer detain immigrant minors in centers of the National Immigration Institute, which are usually for adults, but would instead transfer them to another agency, whose facilities are more limited.
Shortly after implementing this policy, Mexican authorities banned the US from returning immigrant families, which affected certain border practices of the Trump administration and is now affecting Biden’s immigration plans due to a surge of illegal border crossings.

Mexican restrictions increase current border controversy
Since February 2021, just a couple of weeks after President Joe Biden took office, border forces have reported a growing number of immigrants apprehended at the US borders without documentation, including unaccompanied immigrant minors and family units.
Certain border restrictions related to the health crisis are still in place, allowing the Biden administration to expel most migrants apprehended at the borders almost immediately.
However, because Mexico is no longer allowing the US to send family units into its territory, local border forces are releasing immigrant families within the US to prevent another massive outbreak of COVID-19 inside immigrant detention centers and because, thanks to the surge of illegal border crossings, these facilities have already reached their maximum capacity.
The current border situation and restrictions implemented by the Mexican government undoubtedly increase the pressure on the Biden administration, which must control the surge of illegal crossings before it can promote comprehensive immigration reform.
