Mexico Supports Biden’s Immigration Reform
Biden’s comprehensive immigration reform
Like former President Donald Trump, an essential aspect of the political identity of the current president of the US is his stance on immigration. However, despite the fact that immigration is paramount for the two administrations, they completely differ in their vision regarding this sector.
For President Joe Biden, who took office on January 20, 2021, the country urgently needs a transformation in the way it approaches immigration. Biden states that in order for the US to overcome the current crisis and remain a world power, its immigration system must protect the most vulnerable immigrant communities and open its doors to highly qualified foreign workers.
The current administration assures that immigration is an advantage and a strength for the local economy and that, without foreign workforce, the US would lose international competitiveness and stop attracting talent from abroad, which would affect thousands of local companies that benefit greatly from immigration.
Hence, reforming the immigration system is a priority for the Biden administration. To achieve this goal, the current president plans to:
- Lift the Trump administration’s restrictions on the immigration system. In fact, President Biden has already issued multiple Executive Orders and Memoranda to remove Trump’s immigration policies.
- Promote comprehensive immigration reform in the US. In fact, President Biden has already introduced an immigration bill, which, if passed by Congress, would lead to the complete restructuring of the current immigration system.

Mexico supports President Biden’s immigration proposal
The Biden government has consistently emphasized the need to reform the immigration system, which has also drawn the attention of several countries around the world, most of which support Biden’s initiative.
For instance, in the case of Mexico, Ricardo Monreal, chairman of the Senate Political Coordination Board, released a letter (Spanish) on Saturday, February 6, 2021, on his official website, openly expressing his unconditional support for Biden’s immigration reform.
Monreal, who also coordinates the Parliamentary Group of Morena (political party that currently leads Mexico’s government), stated through his letter “The Reform that has not been,” that the regional immigration system urgently needs a transformation due to increased immigration in recent years, which also comes with technological progress and globalization.
Adding to that, he declares that “an immigration reform initiative of this scope could be good news, especially if it is joined by executive orders that help restore the dignity of migrants (…) Mexico is ready to work with the United States on joint initiatives.”
Mexico’s support could allow the Biden government to implement necessary changes on the immigration system and create international cooperation strategies to curb irregular immigration and expand alternatives for vulnerable communities at a regional scale.
