Mexico will no Longer Detain Minors in Immigrant Centers
Agreements between the US and Mexico
It is well known that one of the purposes of the current administration of the US is to reduce immigration at all costs. That is why since President Trump took office in 2017, his administration has used all the tools at its disposal to curb immigration, mainly illegal.
Therefore, apart from investing in the construction of the border wall that separates the US from Mexico, the Trump administration has tried to create agreements with neighboring countries to reduce the massive flow of undocumented immigrants from Central America.
Mexico is one of the countries that has collaborated with the cause of the Trump administration and currently has several agreements to curb illegal immigration. For instance, in 2019, these governments implemented the Migrant Protection Protocol (MPP), which states that asylum seekers must remain in Mexico while they receive a response to their immigration requests. In fact, this immigration policy is also knows as “Remain in Mexico.”
Adding to that, in an attempt to curb illegal immigration to the US, Mexico keeps immigrant families in detention centers, including minors, which, in the opinion of experts, can delay the development of children and generate negative repercussions such as long-term trauma.

Mexico will no longer keep minors in immigration detention centers
On Wednesday, November 11, 2020, Mexico’s government stated that it will no longer detain minors in centers of the National Immigration Institute, but that they will be transferred, along with their parents, to facilities of the Family Development Agency, where they will receive special care and minors will have the possibility to request international protection before facing deportation proceedings.
Thus, Mexico is moving away from the Trump administration’s intention to reduce immigration at all costs. Rather, it is taking into account human needs of the most vulnerable immigrant communities.
The government of Mexico received praise and applauses from the United Nations (UN) and multiple humanitarian organizations, which have tried for several years to stop mass detention and deportation of immigrant minors in Mexico.
In fact, the UN stated: “The implementation of the reforms will help strengthen the system of childhood protection, benefiting the girls, boys and adolescents in the context of human mobility, by guaranteeing them comprehensive compliance with their rights and making their best interest central.”
