Michigan Universities Also Oppose Trump’s Restrictions
The lawsuit filed against the Trump government
On Wednesday, July 8, 2020, Harvard University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) filed a lawsuit against the recently implemented restrictions on student visas in the US.
The Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency (ICE) announced new restrictions on student visa holders.
Let’s see some of them:
- Universities that offer only virtual classes during the fall will not be able to have international students.
- If foreign students are part of a university that only offers virtual classes, they could be deported and lose their legal residence permit.
- Foreign students have the possibility to change institutions to one that offers face-to-face classes, at least a weekly portion.

The government’s arguments
President Donald Trump published on twitter that the federal government should not grant funds to universities if they do not meet the requirement to resume, at least partially, face-to-face classes.
In fact, President Trump announced in a press release: “So, we’re very much going to put pressure on governors and everybody else to open the schools to get them open and it’s very important. It’s very important for our country”.
In addition to that, the president assures that the quality of merely virtual teaching cannot be compared to face-to-face teaching. Therefore, he considers that the country is recognized worldwide for the quality of the education sector and universities cannot allow that image to be devalued.

Michigan universities oppose these restrictions
Two Michigan universities decided to support Harvard and MIT to fight against the restrictions implemented by the Trump government and try to protect the rights of foreign students who are an important part of the educational sector in the US.
These two universities are:
- Wayne State University.
- Oakland University.
These Michigan-based universities want to support the lawsuit filed on July 8.
In addition to that, the universities are trying to change their virtual schedules to be able to offer face-to-face classes to international students and protect them from possible deportation.
The most renowned institutions in the country argue that the presence of foreign students is essential not only for international competitiveness but also for the economic support necessary to overcome the current situation.
