Mexican Authorities Stop Migrant Caravan Again

Mexican authorities have always been essential in the task of curbing, stopping and handling massive irregular migration to the US. In fact, during the last few months, when border apprehension rates have surpassed the numbers of the last decades, Mexican authorities have intercepted and blocked several migrant caravans coming from Central and South American countries such as Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, Nicaragua and Venezuela.

To give a specific example, last weekend (September 4 and 5), the Mexican National Guard and the INM (National Migration Institute) blocked a migrant caravan in southern Mexico.

This time, approximately 400 migrants made up the caravan and came mainly from Central American countries, Venezuela and Haiti. This is just one of a number of migrant caravans intercepted in recent months.

Due to the alarming number of undocumented migrants attempting to reach the US’ borders, Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador (AMLO)  is asking the Biden administration for help to effectively address the situation and invest in the Central American territory to improve the quality of life of local citizens in order to reduce irregular migration from its roots.

Adding to that, AMLO states that slowing and blocking irregular migration is only a temporary strategy that does not bring lasting solutions, which may mean that the US will continue to experience the surge of illegal border crossings until it effectively addresses the situation.
