Migrant Caravan Swells to Almost 9000 People
First migrant caravan of 2021
The sudden arrival of the global Coronavirus pandemic and its massive outbreak around the world brought an unprecedented global crisis. There are dozens of countries tremendously affected by the sanitary crisis, which also generated an economic, social and even political crisis.
The Central American territory is one of the most affected by the health emergency. There are thousands of families who lost their jobs during the current juncture and governments do not have enough resources to help all Central American citizens in times of crisis. Adding to that, countries such as Honduras, Nicaragua and Guatemala felt the impact of several natural disasters in November 2020, worsening the situation and forcing affected families to seek other alternatives, solutions and opportunities to survive.
Thousands of Central American citizens see the US as a land of opportunities, where they can request international protection through humanitarian programs such as political asylum, have employment alternatives, protect their beloved ones, and find economic stability.
Therefore, in the midst of the health crisis and hoping to build a promising future, the first migrant caravan of 2021 left Honduras on Friday, January 15, with approximately 2,000 people, who state that they have no support from their governments and their lives are in danger without jobs, food or basic services to survive amid the global crisis.
Adding to that, since the incoming government (Biden – Harris) promised to reform the immigration system and protect asylum seekers, they hope that the president-elect will fulfill his promise and allow them to work and reside in the US.

Now there are almost 9,000 people in the migrant caravan
Just four days after the migrant caravan left Honduras, the number of people heading to the US increased disproportionately. According to official figures, the migrant caravan currently has between 7,000 and 9,000 people.
They hope that Joe Biden, who will take office on January 20, 2021, will expand legal alternatives for asylum seekers and allow them to build a promising future in the US. Apart from that, according to their testimonies, they cannot continue living in their countries because there are no resources to get food for their families and their integrity is at risk in these vulnerable environments.
The Biden administration promised to remove Trump’s restrictions on the political asylum program, but these changes will not happen as quickly as immigrant communities would hope. Therefore, the first migrant caravan of 2021 will undoubtedly be one of the first challenges for the Biden administration and it will have to act cautiously to avoid an immigration crisis both at the borders and within the US.
Adding to that, one of the concerns among Central American governments, experts and critics is the fact that the world has not yet won the battle against the COVID-19 pandemic and the US is still the main epicenter of the health crisis after more of 9 consecutive months. Thus, almost 9,000 immigrants are crossing the borders without legal documentation and without Coronavirus tests, which could worsen the sanitary emergency and fuel another massive outbreak in the North American territory.
