Misinformation Among Immigrant Communities in Mexico
Biden’s promises give hope to immigrant communities
The Biden administration’s stance on immigration has opened a door of hope for immigrant communities, especially the most vulnerable such as refugees, asylum seekers, DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals) recipients, TPS (Temporary Protected Status) beneficiaries, inter alia.
This is mainly due to the fact that, during the last four years, former President Donald Trump and his cabinet tried to narrow down viable alternatives for immigrant populations and hindered processes to access international protection in the US through humanitarian programs.
On the contrary, the current administration’s message is quite welcoming and positive. President Joe Biden initially promised to revoke Trump’s restrictions on immigration processes in order to reform the entire immigration system, protecting the values
Therefore, immigrant communities, especially those affected by limitations implemented by Trump, hope that the changes will take place soon, so they can enter the US and build a promising future.
However, for the pertinent and necessary changes to the immigration system to be lasting and stable, the Biden administration will need time to remove restrictive policies of the previous administration and establish new parameters to improve the immigration sector and protect the most vulnerable communities.

Smugglers deceive immigrant families at the borders
Impatience is growing among the most vulnerable immigrant populations, especially among asylum seekers who have had to wait in Mexico under the MPP (Migrant Protection Protocol), a policy implemented by the Trump administration in 2019, which forces asylum seekers to remain in Mexico while they receive a response to their immigration applications.
They, who have had to wait several months or even more than a year, currently live in temporary shelters or foundations in dangerous cities of Mexico and hope that the Biden administration will offer them alternatives to enter the US soon, which has allowed smuggling groups to take advantage of the situation and deceive thousands of asylum seekers.
In fact, according to the testimony of several immigration attorneys, smugglers are sending deceptive messages to asylum seekers through platforms such as WhatsApp, telling them to move to other places along the borders or that border officials will allow them to enter the US on a specific date.
Smugglers, after giving false expectations and hopes to asylum seekers, take advantage to sell their services and enter the North American territory unlawfully, which could have extremely negative repercussions, such as deportation, for people fleeing violence and persecution.
Therefore, to avoid misinformation, it is important to keep up to date with the latest immigration news (our Blog section can help), closely follow the Biden administration’s statements regarding immigration, and seek reliable help.
In fact, the Biden administration has not given specific dates or commented on the next steps to take with asylum seekers who are patiently waiting in Mexico under the MPP policy. However, the current president and his team have stated that changes to the immigration system will take time to be effective.
