Mississippi Leaders Comment on Current Border Situation

Mississippi leaders discuss strategies to control the situation at the borders

The current border situation draws the attention of every state in the country

Ever since President Joe Biden launched his political campaign for the November 2020 elections, immigration has always been an essential sector for him. The Biden administration states that it is the federal government’s responsibility to rebuild an already broken immigration system and repair the damage caused by the previous administration, led by former President Donald Trump, to the most vulnerable immigrant populations.

Thus, since President Biden took office in January 2021, his administration has removed several restrictive policies implemented by the Trump administration on the US immigration sector. However, the Biden administration is currently facing a crossroads because, as it tries to gradually reform the immigration system, there is a surge of immigrants trying to cross the country’s borders without legal documentation.

The number of undocumented immigrants apprehended by US border forces has increased exponentially since early February 2021, just weeks after President Biden took office. Therefore, despite the fact that the surge of illegal border crossings does not depend entirely on his administration, dozens of critics and opposition groups are blaming the president and his team for encouraging irregular immigration and sending confusing messages to immigrant communities.

However, recently, not only the president, but also senior White House officials have sent a direct message to undocumented immigrants, stating that this is not the right time to enter the US without authorization amid the global Coronavirus pandemic, and that irregular immigration violates local law and will not be allowed.

The current border situation undoubtedly involves every state in the country because, if there is an increase in foreigners entering the US, then local organizations and leaders must organize to receive new communities.

Mississippi leaders discuss strategies to control the situation at the borders

For instance, several leaders in Mississippi are already considering some strategies to control the situation at the borders and prevent a massive flow of immigrants into the US, although not all agree with the same premises.

On the one hand, there are Mississippi leaders who believe that stricter immigration policies are necessary to curb illegal immigration and improve the situation at the borders. That is the case of Chris McDaniel, a member of the Senate for Mississippi, who states that “we cannot have an immigration policy that allows people to ignore our laws and cross the border indiscriminately without some sort of punishment.”

On the other hand, there are leaders of different organizations who believe that more welcoming policies are the solution to control the situation at the borders and, at the same time, offer viable alternatives to the most vulnerable immigrant communities.
