National Census Affected by Ideals of Trump’s Government
The Trump administration insists on excluding undocumented immigrants from the Census
The National Census takes place every 10 years and 2020 is one of those years. The deadline for all residents of the US to complete the survey is September 30.
Some of the purposes of the census are:
- Determine the population density (how many people reside in each state).
- Distribute seats in Congress for each state, depending on local population density.
- The government must allocate federal funds for each state to invest in infrastructure, socioeconomic development, health, education, medicine, entrepreneurship projects, inter alia.
- Analyze the behavior of the economy every 10 years depending on the population density of each state.
It is well known that the current administration of the US has a strict stance when it comes to illegal immigration. Therefore, one of the Trump administration’s proposals is to exclude undocumented immigrants from the National Census, arguing that individuals who violate local law and cross the country’s borders without prior authorization should not be part of any national project, nor should they receive benefits from local governments.
Recently, a New York court rejected the Trump administration’s request and declared that all individuals currently residing in the US must be part of the census, regardless of their immigration status.
After this event, the Trump administration stated that it will take the case to the Supreme Court of Justice, mainly because it does not agree with including undocumented foreigners in something as important as the National Census.
Undocumented immigrants decide not to participate in the National Census
It is imperative to clarify that this is a mandatory survey and according to local law, all residents of the country must complete it every 10 years.
However, despite the fact that a court ruled in favor of undocumented immigrants, the government’s intention to exclude them from the census has caused thousands of them not to complete it.
For instance, in some neighborhoods of Chicago, Illinois, the Census figures dropped considerably compared to the figures obtained in 2010.
In one of the neighborhoods where dozens of undocumented immigrants reside, official figures show that only 26.8% of the local population has completed the survey. The figure was 44.6% 10 years ago, which represents a substantial decrease.
Thus, the Trump administration’s proposal is affecting the census, and it will be difficult for the US Census Bureau to obtain an accurate figure of how many people actually reside in the country.
In fact, dozens of undocumented immigrants have raised their voices, stating that the Trump administration could deport them with the information obtained from the census, and they are not willing to risk their ongoing immigration processes.
On top of that, multiple activist organizations openly argue that the Trump government is pressuring undocumented immigrant communities to distribute fewer seats in Congress to states that have sanctuary cities or laws, which protect undocumented foreigners.
