Natural Disasters in Central America Could Increase Immigration to the US

Hurricanes affect Central American territory

We are currently going through the Atlantic Hurricane Season, which normally takes place between June 1 and November 30. However, this year has been quite peculiar since the Hurricanes have been stronger than usual.

On the one hand, Hurricane Eta is the second strongest reported in November, after Hurricane Cuba, which took place in 1932. Eta rapidly intensified as of November 2, 2020, and affected Central American territory in Guatemala and Honduras.

On the other hand, Hurricane Iota reached category 5, which is the highest level, and affected Nicaragua, Honduras and Colombia. These natural disasters have harmed the lives of thousands of people.

In fact, according to the report of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), hurricanes Eta and Iota affected more than 7 million people in Central America.

Let’s see some official figures:

  • More than 3 million people affected in Honduras.
  • Almost 2 million people affected in Guatemala.
  • 2 million people exposed to hurricanes in Nicaragua.

Global pandemic also hits the Central American territory

Most Central American countries are considered third world countries due to their economic system, the quality of life of their citizens, technological development, health system, illiteracy rate, population density, inter alia.

Since the global Coronavirus pandemic reached North American territory, Central American countries tried to implement emergency measures to avoid a massive outbreak in their territories, mainly because they do not have enough resources to protect the health of the local population and save as many lives as possible during the sanitary emergency.

However, these countries also had to make decisions regarding the economy, which was disproportionately unbalanced due to quarantines and unemployment rate.

Therefore, due to current conditions in these countries and the fact that thousands of people do not have any resources after natural disasters, there is a possibility that immigration to the US increases considerably.

Dozens of experts state that there will soon be caravans of immigrants heading to the US due to precarious situations, natural disasters and lack of opportunities for Central American citizens.

In fact, a Honduran sociologist states: “This is going to be much bigger than what we have been seeing (…) I believe entire communities are going to leave (…) The outlook is heartbreaking.”

Adding to that, they assure that Central American citizens will try to protect their families at all costs and will migrate to the US looking for job opportunities and yearning to build a promising future for their beloved ones.

Other than that, President-elect Joe Biden plans to expand immigration benefits, which could incentivize more people to migrate from Central America. The Biden government assures that immigration is truly positive for the US and contributes greatly to the socio-economic development of companies and the local market.
