Nearly 60 Universities Support Harvard and MIT Lawsuit
ICE faces a lawsuit
The Trump government, through the Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency (ICE), recently announced new restrictions on student visas in the US.
Broadly speaking, the Trump government plans to revive the economy by gradually opening different sectors of society.
One of those sectors is education. The current administration of the US wants to put more pressure to motivate schools to partially retake face-to-face classes during the fall. In fact, President Trump openly stated: “We’re very much going to put pressure on governors and everybody else to open the schools, to get them open”.
Therefore, ICE announced new regulations, restrictions and requirements for student visas during the fall.
For instance, students who attend purely virtual classes, must change to institutions that offer a portion of face-to-face classes, or they will have to leave the US to avoid a deportation process.
Because of this measure, labeled as “capricious and arbitrary”, Harvard University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) filed a lawsuit against these restrictions implemented by ICE.

The lawsuit
These two institutions, recognized internationally for the quality of their studies and their focus on development and technological research, filed a lawsuit against the pressure on international students.
The lawsuit states that resuming face-to-face classes is increasing the risk for both students and teachers. The consequences could be catastrophic in the midst of a global pandemic, as the nouvelle Coronavirus is highly contagious through human contact.
Therefore, universities ask the Trump government to protect their staff, as well as international students who support the local economy and are a fundamental part to overcome the current juncture.

Dozens of universities join the cause
Due to possible consequences, almost 60 universities around the country decided to file a supporting to complement the lawsuit filed by Harvard and MIT.
These institutions assure that retaking face-to-face classes would increase the risk to public health and could generate a second wave of Coronavirus outbreak in the country.
Therefore, universities ask the Trump government to reverse this measure and allow them to offer virtual classes until the threat to public health diminishes and the US is no longer the main epicenter of the global pandemic.
The Trump government’s response
It is understandable that the current administration of the US wants to reopen certain sectors to boost the economy and to overcome the current crisis.
However, what the universities claim is that putting the health of innocent foreigners and qualified teachers at risk is not going to bring any benefit to the country’s economy. On the contrary, it could lengthen the crisis and unleash unnecessary social chaos.
The Trump administration has not responded to the lawsuit, but the first hearing assigned to the case will take place on July 15, 2020.
