New Lawsuit Against Limitations on Visits to Detained Immigrants

Activists group files a lawsuit against government's restrictions on visits to detained immigrants

The constant fight of immigrant rights advocates

The US is known for welcoming immigrant families who need it most through processes such as political asylum or refuge. Also, the immigration system offers multiple alternatives available to foreigners who plan to come to the country to gain work experience, invest in local companies, take tourist trips, visit their relatives, inter alia.

Apart from legal processes and visas issued by the US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), illegal immigration also plays a major role and generates a gigantic controversy in the country.

This is mainly due to the fact that multiple immigration policies make it difficult for undocumented foreigners to apply for legal residence or any other documentation that protects them from deportation proceedings or precarious situations with local border forces.

Adding to that, the current administration of the US, led by President Donald Trump, has a strict stance when it comes to immigration and that is why it has considerably increased restrictions and requirements for immigrants who crossed the country’s borders without prior authorization.

In fact, the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) currently has the power and right to detain undocumented immigrants at the borders and around the country, and take them to jails or immigration detention centers for an indefinite period of time, until their deportation proceedings are completed.

That is the main reason why hundreds of immigrant rights advocates and activist organizations constantly protest, asking the government to offer better conditions for immigrant communities currently residing in the US, both legally and illegally.

Group of activists files a lawsuit

Freedom for Immigrants is a group of activists created in 2010 with the purpose of fighting against the detention of immigrants.

This organization has a program named the Etowah Visitation Project. Through this project, volunteers have the opportunity to visit immigrants detained in a county jail located in Gadsden. Through these visits, Freedom for Immigrants activists support and legally advise some of the detained immigrants.

This program has been substantially restricted since 2019. Activists claim that these restrictions were implemented after they participated in a protest in front of this jail and that it is a retaliation by the federal government.

That is why Freedom for Immigrants recently filed a lawsuit against the restrictions of the Etowah Visitation Project.

In fact, one of the creators of the project stated: “Even a freely given benefit like the Visitation Project cannot be taken away because the government is unhappy with how we’re sharing with the public what we know from our communications with the people inside.
