New Protest for Immigration Reform During COVID-19 Outbreak
The new direction of immigration
The health crisis generated by the global Coronavirus pandemic has drastically changed the way we relate to our environment and multiple important sectors of society have been affected by the current juncture.
For instance, talking specifically about immigration in the US, several changes have been implemented as emergency measures to mitigate the impact of the pandemic. Plus, regulations and requirements for certain processes have also increased.
Therefore, immigration is one of the sectors that has changed the most under the Trump government during the health crisis.
It is important to clarify that the current administration of the US has always had the purpose to reduce legal immigration by lowering the number of visas issued annually and to eradicate illegal immigration at all costs.
The fact that President Trump has implemented multiple emergency measures on the immigration sector during the massive Coronavirus outbreak has sparked a gigantic controversy in the US.
This is mainly because activist organizations and hundreds of immigrant rights advocates declare that the Trump administration is using the global pandemic as an excuse to fulfill its immigration agenda:
- Increasing restrictions for foreigners.
- Banning the entry of immigrants to the country.
- Making the political asylum process more difficult.
- Reducing the number of entry and residence permits issued by the US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS).
That is why, during the last two months, there have been dozens of protests in front of immigration courts, immigration detention centers, government facilities around the country, inter alia.
Recent protest in Greensboro
A protest called the “Downtown Unity Walk for Immigration Reform” took place on Sunday, August 30, 2020, on the streets of Greensboro, NC.
Initially, participants wanted to walk downtown and then return to the Westminster Presbyterian Church. However, due to the imminent risk generated by the COVID-19, they decided to hold the protest in cars.
The main reason for the protest is to fight against current immigration reform in the US. With this, participants refer to the family separation, social division and discrimination that Trump’s immigration policies have generated and his ideals of isolating the country from the rest of the world, which, in their opinion, would only bring negative repercussions.
Hundreds of people attended the protest with the ideal of creating an impact and a wake-up call for the Trump administration to remove the restrictions implemented in the immigration sector during the current crisis.
