New Stimulus Check Will Include Mixed Families
The Trump administration’s reaction to the health crisis
The Trump administration had to act strategically and quickly to mitigate the impact of the global Coronavirus pandemic in the North American territory, protect the local population and the economy, safeguard essential resources and offer assistance to families affected by the unemployment rate, which skyrocketed in a matter of weeks.
For instance, the Trump administration offered Stimulus Checks to families affected by the sanitary emergency, who lost their jobs and did not have financial resources or any other source of income to support their beloved ones in times of crisis.
In March 2020, Congress approved the first relief package, when the first massive outbreak of Coronavirus reached the US and many states decided to use quarantines as a preventive measure, which generated an economic crisis nationwide.

Stimulus checks excluded immigrant communities
During the first round of stimulus checks, the Trump administration excluded a large portion of immigrants currently residing in the US.
The president, along with his cabinet, stated that immigrants without a Social Security Number (SSN) should not receive monetary aid from the government. Adding to that, the Trump administration also tried to exclude:
- Immigrants without SSN who pay mandatory annual taxes through their Individual Tax Identification Number (ITIN) and who, for the most part, have pending immigration cases to receive their legal documentation since they meet mandatory requirements.
- American citizens married to undocumented immigrants or without SSN.
- Mixed families with American minors. (Mixed families are typically: an American parent and an undocumented immigrant, or two undocumented parents.)
Normally, minors also have the right to receive monetary aid from the government through legal representatives. However, the Trump administration wanted to ban mixed families from receiving stimulus checks for American minors.

Mixed families will be eligible for new round of stimulus checks
On Monday, December 21, 2020, a new Coronavirus relief package was passed for Congress approval. Eligible residents, both adults and minors, will receive $600 each.
Mixed families will be included in the distribution of the new stimulus checks, opening a door of hope for more than 14 million mixed families in the US, who were excluded from the first Coronavirus relief package.
American citizens, who file taxes with their immigrant spouses, celebrated this news and hope they can receive the stimulus check while they return to their jobs and find financial stability again.
It is important to clarify that the Trump administration decided to include mixed families in this round of stimulus checks due to multiple lawsuits filed by American citizens, taxpaying immigrants, and pressure from Democratic groups and immigrant rights advocates.
