New York Feels the Impact of Reduced Immigration
The impact of current policies on immigration
The recent history of the US has seen two administrations with almost diametrically opposite positions when it comes to the immigration sector.
On the one hand, former President Barack Obama wanted to increase benefits for the most vulnerable immigrant communities, in fact, dozens of programs were implemented during his term.
On the other hand, the current president, Donald Trump, has a more radical stance on immigration and argues that the massive influx of foreigners is not beneficial for the country. In fact, during the last three years, more than 400 changes have been implemented in the immigration sector and restrictions have also increased substantially.
Nowadays, the country’s immigration processes are considerably behind schedule due to the massive outbreak of Coronavirus, which forced the US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) to close its offices.
Adding to that, the Trump administration also contributed to the suspension of most immigration processes during the health crisis. Hundreds of activists claim that the current administration is using the pandemic as an excuse to fulfill its “anti-immigration agenda”.
Yet despite the Trump administration’s ideal of reducing immigration, both legal and illegal, dozens of cities, states, counties, and towns of the US benefit greatly from foreigners who become essential workforce for multiple sectors of the local market. That is the case of New York City.

New York feels the absence of immigrants
Clearly, immigration has decreased considerably since the arrival of the Coronavirus in the North American territory. However, official figures also show that even before the arrival of the pandemic, immigration had already decreased in New York City since President Trump took office.
It is important to clarify that the impact of immigration in this city is directly related to the labor sector, the workforce and entrepreneurship projects. In fact, a study conducted in 2019 showed that 45% of local workforce comes from highly qualified foreign workers.
At the same time, the number of immigrants arriving in New York City has also decreased by 45% since 2016.
This affects tremendously the local production because immigrant communities are the owners of more than half of the businesses in this city, which indicates that they constantly boost the economy, contribute to the socioeconomic development of the country, offer salaries to the local population and create projects.
Therefore, experts emphasize that the current administration of the US and the next president (after the elections in November) must improve the legal immigration system, so that New York’s workforce does not decrease even more and affect the local economy.
