Number of Immigrant Families Crossing Borders Unlawfully Increases
The Biden administration faces a border crisis
The US border authorities have reported a substantial increase in the number of immigrant families crossing the borders without legal documentation, mainly at night. Border forces state that the situation is similar to what happened between 2018 and 2019, when the number of immigrant families (parents and minors) crossing the borders unlawfully increased disproportionately, setting a record.
This represents a gigantic challenge for the Biden administration, which plans to restructure and reform the immigration system and expand alternatives available to both undocumented immigrants and the most vulnerable populations such as refugees and asylum seekers. It should be noted that most families who cross borders without prior authorization hope to have the opportunity to apply for political asylum or other humanitarian programs.
Usually, when border forces detain undocumented immigrant families, they are taken to Family Centers, migrant shelters, or Border Patrol stations, where they must present their cases and await a response to their immigration requests.
However, the real challenge lies in the fact that these facilities have already reached their maximum capacity and some of them are overcrowded, which represents an imminent risk as we are still going through an unprecedented health crisis, the global COVID-19 pandemic.
Hence, Biden’s opponents criticize his welcoming stance on immigration in times of crisis, arguing that his immigration proposals are increasing the influx of undocumented foreigners at the borders, which, in their view, could trigger another massive outbreak of Coronavirus in the North American territory.
Mexico no longer receives immigrant families from the US
Border authorities are facing an unprecedented challenge as, apart from the rise in illegal crossings, Mexico is not receiving immigrant families from the US.
During the massive outbreak of the Coronavirus, more specifically since March 2020, the US was returning undocumented immigrant families to Mexico on grounds of sanitary emergency. Then-President Donald Trump declared that this rule would prevent Family Centers and other detention facilities from becoming overcrowded amid the health crisis.
However, in November 2020, the Mexican government banned local authorities from detaining unaccompanied minors at the National Immigration Institute centers, most of whom were returned from the US.
Therefore, in recent months, Mexican authorities have banned the US border forces from returning immigrant families, both parents and minors, to Mexican territory.
As a result, federal entities such as CBP (Customs and Border Protection) and ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) are releasing immigrant families, who cross borders without legal documentation, in the US territory to prevent the massive spread of Coronavirus within federal detention facilities.
