OH: Activists Collect Donations for Asylum Seekers
Immigrant communities expect change under Biden
The results of the most recent presidential elections of the US, which took place in early November 2020, opened a door of hope for immigrant communities such as asylum seekers. The American population elected Joe Biden, the Democratic nominee, as the nation’s 46th president, who promised to improve the immigration system by lifting the Trump administration’s restrictions and implementing more welcoming and humane policies to migrate safely.
It is no secret that President Trump’s administration, who will have to leave office on January 20, 2021, tried to reduce alternatives available to immigrants, including those who need international protection, and to hinder immigration processes by increasing requirements and eligibility parameters.
Therefore, with the arrival of the new government, not only immigrant communities expect radical change, but also dozens of activists, immigration attorneys, immigrant rights advocates, experts and critics, who have constantly challenged the Trump administration’s restrictions on the immigration system through lawsuits and other legal processes.
Thousands of immigrants plan to reach the US’ borders soon
The Biden administration will have to face a wave of immigrants at the borders after Inauguration Day (January 20) for multiple reasons.
Let’s see some of them:
- Central America, besides the health crisis caused by the global Coronavirus pandemic, also felt the impact of several natural disasters during November, 2020. These unfortunate events left thousands of families affected, who plan to migrate to the US to seek new opportunities.
- The first migrant caravan of 2021 recently left Honduras with more than 2000 people, who state that local governments do not help them nor offer them basic resources to survive and, therefore, they must migrate to the US. They hope the Biden government allows them to apply for international protection through political asylum.

Columbus collects donations to help immigrants reaching the borders
Dozens of activists, immigrant rights advocates, and volunteers have been receiving and collecting donations at the Columbus Global Academy (Ohio) for asylum seekers arriving in the city after the president-elect takes office and removes the Migrant Protection Protocol (MPP) or “Remain in Mexico.”
This policy was implemented by the Trump administration in 2019 and states that asylum seekers must remain in Mexico while they await responses to their immigration applications. Currently, thousands of asylum seekers live in temporary shelters in dangerous cities of Mexico, often without access to basic services and at the mercy of local gangs.
Thus, activists in Columbus are collecting clothing, toys, dishes, books and food for asylum seekers who arrive in the city after the president-elect takes office. They state that asylum seekers are “escaping something very, very horrific” and normally arrive at the US’ borders without financial resources or personal belongings. Activists declare that they urgently need help, not only from the government, but also from humanitarian organizations that look after their well-being and safety.
