Political Leaders Could Approach Immigration from Another Perspective
Polarized views on immigration
It is no secret that talking about immigration can be a difficult task, especially in a country like the US, which benefits from the presence of different immigrant communities, foreign workers and attracts thousands of people from all over the world, but which also has a fairly extensive immigration system, sometimes complex and different opinions among the local population.
In fact, the political debate around immigration has always been present throughout history and, at this point, it seems like a never-ending battle. For instance, speaking specifically about the two most important and influential political parties in the US, both the Republican and Democratic parties often have an inflexible stance on immigration, which can lead to polarized and divided opinions.
Analyzing what has happened in the last decades in the US, one could conclude that the Republican party leans more towards strict border policies, restrictions on the immigration system and controlled and monitored immigration levels. Conversely, the Democratic party leans more toward flexible border policies and expanding immigration programs available to all kinds of foreign communities.
Clearly, it is not possible to generalize about the opinions of each political party, but it is possible to comment on the most important characteristics of their vision when it comes to immigration in general, both legal and illegal.

What would change if there were no polarized views on immigration?
It is important to analyze in depth what has been the impact of inflexible views when it comes to immigration, that is, opinions that rarely allow counter-argument or debate. So far, in the 21st century, three administrations have already tried to promote comprehensive immigration reform without any success.
The last time Congress passed immigration reform was in the mid-1980s, which could demonstrate that having a fixed and static stance on immigration doesn’t always bring the expected results. Then, what would be the best way to tackle such a controversial issue as immigration?
According to writer Jim Price, both Republican and Democratic Party leaders should put differences and their desire to defend only one political opinion aside, which would allow them to acknowledge the gigantic contribution of immigrant communities and offer better alternatives for foreigners. He openly states that “The opportunists who control both parties need to do better and come up with a path to citizenship for all”.
Adding to that, in one of our most recent articles we talked about the importance of approaching immigration with a more flexible view, which allows Congress to move forward with certain proposals rather than rejecting entire immigration bills.
