Poll Reveals Immigration Policies Affected Trump’s Campaign
Trump’s immigration policies and their role in the presidential election
When the current president of the US, Donald Trump, launched his political campaign for the first time in 2015, one of the main themes of his candidacy was immigration. This includes, but is not limited to:
- Visa processes.
- Illegal immigration.
- Border security.
- Deportation proceedings.
- Humanitarian programs.
Broadly speaking, President Trump questioned the entire immigration system and stated that the government had an obligation to adopt a new path for immigration, which included a system based on merit rather than humanitarian options or family ties.
However, the Trump administration implemented immigration policies that tremendously affected the opinion of a large portion of the American population. This is mainly due to the fact that these policies increased family separation at the borders, isolated asylum seekers, increased social division between citizens and immigrant communities, contributed to the massive spread of COVID-19 in immigrant detention centers, inter alia.

Results of the POS poll during the presidential elections
Public Opinion Strategies (POS, for its acronym in English) is a firm that uses multiple research techniques and creates polls of political and public affairs in order to know the opinion of the local population and help its clients achieve their purposes.
POS conducted a poll on Presidential election day (November 3), in which 800 voters participated. The survey had a section on the opinion of the population regarding immigration.
Surprisingly, despite the fact that President Trump won millions of votes during the 2016 elections due to his stance on immigration, his policies led to a portion of the American population choosing to vote for Joe Biden, who was elected as the following President of the US.
Let’s look at some of the poll results:
- 64% of voters support Biden’s plan to offer citizenship to undocumented immigrants, while 27% of voters support Trump’s plan to deport undocumented immigrants without giving them the opportunity to obtain legal residence in the US.
- Regarding Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA), an immigration program that offers protection from deportation to immigrants who came to the country as minors, 61% of voters support Biden’s plan to continue DACA, while 31% of voters support Trump’s plan to remove it.
- 65% of voters do not support the separation of immigrant families at the borders, which increased substantially thanks to Trump’s policies. On the other hand, 24% of voters do support the family separation policy.
The conclusion of the research reveals that 43% of those surveyed consider that Trump’s immigration policies make them less likely to vote for him during the presidential elections.
