Poll Shows Americans’ Views on Immigration
Sudden changes in the immigration sector
Governments around the world were forced to execute sudden action plans to mitigate the impact of the global Coronavirus pandemic, protect the health of the local population and save as many lives as possible.
In the case of the US, the country most affected by the COVID-19 in the world, the Trump government carried out multiple emergency measures. This includes, but is not limited to:
- The closing of the borders.
- Stimulus checks to alleviate the unemployment rate.
- The suspension of work visas (for qualified foreigners).
- The suspension of asylum applications.
- Provisional hospitals for patients with Coronavirus.
- The suspension of Green Card applications.
Several of the emergency measures directly affect the immigration sector of the US. Because President Trump has always tried to reduce immigration, multiple critics and immigrant rights advocates declare that the current government is using the Coronavirus pandemic as a pretext to fulfill its immigration agenda.
Therefore, to find out the opinion of the population, the National Public Radio (NPR) recently carried out a poll to analyze the point of view of Americans regarding the immigration restrictions implemented by the Trump administration during the current juncture.
The NPR survey
The NPR poll is related to current immigration policies and President Trump’s immigration ban. This survey took place in late July 2020 and 1,115 people answered it.
This survey was also conducted two years ago, and the pandemic did indeed bring several changes in the population’s attitude towards immigration.
Broadly speaking, the survey found that the American population supports the restrictions implemented in the immigration sector as long as they have the purpose to counter the impact of the global pandemic and not to fulfill any other political ideal.
Another surprising finding is that immigration came to the background for the local population due to the arrival of the pandemic and the alarming number of people infected with Coronavirus in the country.
For instance, citizens now find it more important for the government to focus on:
- Coronavirus.
- Health care.
- Racial injustice.
- Political extremism.
- Crime and violence.
- Current economic crisis.
- Unemployment rate.
Previously, immigration was among the main concerns of society. However, with the arrival of the pandemic, the health crisis became the main focus of the US.
Speaking specifically about restrictions in the immigration sector, most people agree with the measures, as long as they are active only while the threat to public health diminishes.
The presidential candidates’ stance on immigration will naturally intervene in the November 2020 elections. However, the nominees must also focus on current concerns that directly affect the health of the local population and the current crisis.
