Poll: The Border Situation is Concerning, but There is Growing Support for Immigration
The opinion of the population regarding the border surge and immigration in general
For the past year, the global Coronavirus pandemic and the economy have been the primary focus of the American population. However, now that the health risk is gradually decreasing thanks to the national and global vaccination project, the American public is once again paying attention to other important sectors such as immigration.
In fact, now more than ever, immigration is in the eye of the storm because the new administration (Biden-Harris) plans to restructure the entire immigration system and, at the same time, because of a surge of illegal border crossings that has increased considerably since January 2021.
The situation itself creates a colossal debate and controversy, mainly because, on the one hand, the current levels of irregular immigration are the highest in two decades and, on the other hand, the Biden administration is promoting comprehensive immigration reform, which would substantially transform the US’ approach to immigration in general.
Therefore, to understand the opinion of the American population on this issue, IPSOS and NPR conducted a poll in mid-May, which included 1,176 American adults. The poll’s results reveal that the opinion of the local population varies between concern about the current border situation and growing support for immigration reform.
Let’s look at some of the most important findings:
Current border situation
- 55% of respondents think the surge of illegal border crossings is a major problem. Adding to that, around 8 in 10 American citizens state that the current border situation is a problem in general.
- Three-quarters of respondents do not know if border facilities have enough resources to protect the integrity of unaccompanied immigrant minors.
- 63% of Democratic respondents support the idea of offering resources to certain Central American countries to reduce mass irregular migration.
- 76% of Republican respondents support the idea of constructing the border wall to reduce massive irregular migration from Central America.
Immigration reform
- 51% of respondents support the legalization of Dreamers, who are immigrants who were brought to the US without legal documentation when they were minors, so long as they meet certain eligibility requirements. This means that eligible Dreamers would have a path to legal permanent residence and eventually American citizenship.
- Nearly 7 out of 10 American citizens also support a legal path for beneficiaries of TPS (Temporary Protected Status), a deportation relief program for nationals of certain countries experiencing precarious and risky situations such as natural disasters, ongoing armed conflict, epidemics, inter alia.
- Overall, while there is concern among the American population when it comes to the surge of illegal border crossings, there is growing support among respondents for the need to reform the entire immigration system.
