President Biden celebrates with newly naturalized citizens

On Friday, July 2, 2021, the USCIS (US Citizenship and Immigration Services), which is the branch of DHS (Department of Homeland Security) in charge of receiving immigration applications in the country, launched the “Interagency Strategy for Promoting Naturalization”.

Adding to that, that same day, the current President of the US, Joe Biden, attended a Naturalization Ceremony that took place at the White House, where 21 immigrants from 16 different countries officially became American citizens.

It is important to clarify that the naturalization process is the option available for eligible immigrants to obtain American documentation and receive the same benefits as any other local citizen. This is the last step within the alternatives offered by the local immigration system and it is certainly the goal of millions of immigrants who come to the country with the desire to build a promising future.

During Friday’s Naturalization Ceremony, President Biden openly stated, “It’s dreams of immigrants like you that built America and continued to inject new energy, new vitality, new strength (…) We’ve seen that most clearly during this pandemic, with immigrants as frontline workers and as scientists and researchers on the front lines of finding vaccines”.

The Biden administration’s effort to promote the Naturalization Process

Biden’s USCIS national project aims to naturalize as many eligible immigrants as possible, that is, LPRs (Lawful Permanent Residents). According to the naturalization plan, the USCIS will use all the tools at its disposal to locate immigrants who may become American citizens, as long as they meet certain requirements.

The Biden administration explains that it is absolutely important to include and welcome new citizens, especially because, on the one hand, it is imperative to reduce discrimination, social division and cultural rejection, and, on the other hand, it is evident that the presence of these essential immigrants is a strength to the national economy, and calling them citizens is a compliment to the US.

It is worth mentioning that, aside from the national naturalization project, the Biden administration also plans to expand legal immigration processes as an effective method to reduce irregular migration levels.
