President Elect Talks to AMLO About Immigration
The Biden-Harris government’s stance on immigration
The US is going through a transition period as the local population elected the Democratic candidate, Joe Biden, as the country’s 46th president on November 3, 2020. Despite the current president, Donald Trump, seeking reelection, American citizens decided to change administration.
The president-elect has quite a different view than Trump when it comes to multiple important sectors, such as immigration. The Trump administration has always wanted to reduce immigration and has used all the tools at its disposal to increase restrictions and requirements in immigration processes. Conversely, the Biden government plans to increase benefits, opportunities and alternatives to legally migrate and strengthen the local economy with the contribution of foreign workforce.
Adding to that, the Biden administration plans to remove Trump’s immigration policies and lift restrictions on processes such as political asylum, business immigration, international education and immigration processes based on family ties. The president-elect, along with his cabinet, assure that the US is an immigration nation and that, thanks to the contribution of foreign workers, it is a world power.
However, the president-elect is also aware that, if immigration is not handled properly, it could be massive and trigger a crisis within the US. Therefore, his government is trying to create strategies and action plans to offer international protection to the most vulnerable immigrant communities while, at the same time, protect the local population and avoid a humanitarian crisis at the borders.

Mexico’s President talks to Biden about immigration
According to a recent report by The Washington Post, on Saturday, December 19, the president-elect of the US and the president of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador (also known as AMLO), spoke by phone about immigration and strategies that they will implement to help each other.
The leaders of these two nations highlighted the importance of improving the quality of life in the Central American territory and increasing job opportunities to reduce massive immigration to the US.
In fact, AMLO stated: “We reaffirmed our commitment to work together for the good of our peoples and our countries.” It is also important to clarify that AMLO recently stated that he supports strict immigration policies in Mexico, which have allowed his government to stop and disperse immigrant caravans going to the US.
Apart from that, on Biden’s official transition website, there is a summary about the phone call that took place on Saturday and it states: “The two leaders noted a shared desire to address the root causes of migration in El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and southern Mexico and to build a future of greater opportunity and security for the region.”
Thus, it is very possible that once Biden takes office, Mexico and the US will establish new agreements to control immigration without violating the human rights of the most vulnerable immigrant communities.
