President Trump Attends a Naturalization Ceremony
The presidential elections
Since the US elections will take place in November, 2020, and President Trump is seeking re-election, he and his government cabinet are launching their political campaign during the Republican National Convention (RNC).
This Convention lasts four days (from August 24 to 27) and has the purpose of promoting the presidential campaign of the nominee belonging to the Republican political party. During these four days, the presidential candidate presents his proposals, projects and goals and his main officials also intervene in multiple speeches.
The RNC has been peculiar this year because on the second day, President Trump attended a naturalization ceremony. In fact, when the ceremony ended, the president declared: “Today, America rejoices as we welcome five absolutely incredible new members into our great American family.”
This event generated uncertainty, doubts and controversy among attendees and viewers, mainly because President Donald Trump is characterized by his ideal of reducing legal immigration and eradicating illegal immigration at all costs. That is why, over the past three years, the Trump administration has implemented multiple changes on immigration policies, increasing restrictions and requirements for foreigners planning to come to the country.

Naturalization ceremonies
The Naturalization ceremonies are the last step immigrants must take in order to become legal citizens of the US.
After this event, they have the same rights as any other American citizen and can obtain the same benefits offered by the government, as well as to vote in the country’s elections.
Thus, the fact that President Trump has sponsored a naturalization ceremony for five immigrants created gigantic uncertainty for several reasons.
Let’s see some of them:
- Multiple critics and activists state that President Trump is using immigration resources only to boost his political campaign and get more voters, but that, if he wins re-election, he will most likely continue with his “anti-immigration” agenda.
- Dozens of citizens state that the president is possibly taking a new stance on immigration and could implement positive and beneficial changes for immigrants.
Why does this event generate so much uncertainty?
The main reason dozens of critics argue that attending a naturalization ceremony is just a strategy is because President Trump constantly refers to immigration with a negative connotation since 2015.
In fact, he associates immigrants from Central America with crime on many occasions, calling them “rapists, murderers, criminals,” inter alia.
Therefore, is it possible that this event is an attempt by the Trump administration to have a fresh start with the immigration sector or could it be a strategy to win the 2020 election?
Social discernment becomes essential during these times of crisis, mainly because the next leader of the nation must continue with the purpose of protecting the health of the population and overcoming the current crisis caused by the global Coronavirus pandemic.
