President Trump Refers to Immigrants as Criminals Again
The linchpin of the 2016 presidential elections
Immigration played an essential role during Donald Trump’s presidential campaign to win the 2016 elections. In fact, his assertions regarding immigrants, mainly those who are undocumented, had a negative and derogatory connotation.
President Trump has used terms such as “rapists, criminals, murderers” to refer to undocumented immigrants who cross the borders of the US without prior authorization and who, in most cases, are only trying to seek better opportunities or flee precarious conditions of their countries.
Due to fear founded by his assertions regarding immigration and the lack of reliable sources of information, President Trump has managed to build a considerable portion of the border wall that separates the US from Mexico, implement policies that substantially restrict legal immigration and limit opportunities for undocumented immigrants before deportation.

How have Trump’s comments affected the perception of the American population?
Several studies and investigations, some of them conducted in August 2020, show that more than 40% of the American population still associates immigrants with crime. However, the results of the investigations also show that where there is more immigrant population, including undocumented foreigners, the crime rate decreases, instead of increasing, as claimed by the Trump administration.
Thus, the findings of these studies reveal that the Trump administration has contributed to the misconception of “criminal aliens.” This is primarily due to lack of reliable sources and research. If American citizens corroborate Trump’s comments with reliable data, then they would realize that there is no foundation or trustworthy sources.

Trump uses derogatory terms against undocumented immigrants again
Due to the health crisis caused by the global Coronavirus pandemic, the health system has received most of the attention from presidential campaigns this year, which have focused mainly on protecting the health of the local population and avoiding another massive outbreak in the US, which is the main epicenter of the pandemic.
However, just four days before the election, on Friday, October 30, 2020, Donald Trump issued a presidential proclamation called “Proclamation on National Day of Remembrance for Americans Killed by Illegal Aliens, 2020.”
In this proclamation, President Trump again uses expressions that link all undocumented immigrants to crime, instilling fear, discrimination and division between the American population and immigrant communities currently residing in the US.
Clearly, there are immigrants who have participated in crimes and have been detained by law enforcement entities, but it is important to ask ourselves: is it necessary to generalize when it comes to a topic as sensitive as crime or what is the purpose of these assertions? Our discernment as a society is what is going to decide the country’s future and elect the next leader of the nation.
