Pressure Mounts on Undocumented Immigrant Debate
Controversy around undocumented immigrants
Among the local population, there has always been a controversy related to immigrants who reside in the US undocumented and who, in their vast majority, have lived in the country for several years or even decades.
However, the debate around undocumented immigrants has grown even more since President Joe Biden took office in late January 2021. This happened mainly because his administration is trying to pave the way to restructure the entire immigration system through a comprehensive reform with the help of Congress. Adding to that, the fact that the current president has a diametrically opposite stance on immigration compared to the previous administration is also an influencing factor in the controversy.
It is worth mentioning that the debate essentially refers to whether undocumented immigrants should have a path to legalization in the US, mainly because they have become an important part of the local workforce and provide their services in all kinds of market sectors. However, the fact that they have exceeded their legal permits or entered the country without prior authorization also creates great controversy among the American population because they violated local immigration law.

Several immigration bills are under congressional review
Clearly, the reach and power of the Biden administration only goes so far in changing immigration policies. Therefore, in order to effectively restructure the local immigration system and implement lasting changes, the Biden administration needs support from Congress to pass certain pieces of legislation.
During his early days as leader of the White House, President Biden introduced a fairly broad immigration bill, which, if approved by Congress, would open a path toward legalization for millions of immigrants currently residing in the US undocumented.
Adding to that, several members of Congress have also introduced multiple immigration bills recently. In fact, there is a bill that would offer permanent protection to immigrants who came to the US as minors, known as Dreamers. This immigration bill already passed the House of Representatives and is currently under Senate review.

Activists increase pressure towards legalization of undocumented immigrants
Due to Biden’s immigration plans and proposals, the fact that it was recently the anniversary of a program that protects thousands of Dreamers (DACA- Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals) and that Congress is currently reviewing multiple immigration bills, the debate on the legalization of the undocumented undocumented is constantly present among the local population these days.
In fact, according to a recent report by America’s Voice, there are several organizations, activists, immigrant rights advocates and “powerful voices” that are supporting the path to legal residence for thousands of undocumented immigrants.
