Project Exposes the Repercussions of Mass Deportations
Deportation proceedings in the US
Since the US offers multiple opportunities, it is commonly the destination for thousands of immigrants who yearn to build a promising future in a country where they can find employment, stable income, social security, good quality of life, personal growth, inter alia.
However, on many occasions and for many reasons, immigrants decide to cross the borders of the US without documentation and without following legal process, which can generate adverse, difficult and precarious repercussions for foreigners involved in this maneuver.
In addition to the fact that crossing borders without prior authorization is an imminent risk, the current administration of the US uses fairly strict methods when it comes to illegal immigration, therefore, almost all apprehensions at the borders or around the country lead to deportation.
In fact, the Trump administration has given enormous power to the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency, which conducts investigations and operations to detain undocumented immigrants and initiate deportation proceedings for them.
Adding to that, it is important to understand the real consequences, on a personal level, of both illegal immigration and mass deportations beyond an opinion or political ideal.

Digital storytelling project exposes the aftermath of deportation
In 2017, the University of California Davis, along with four other institutions, started a digital storytelling project called “Humanizing Deportation,” which exposes more than 250 stories, experiences and testimonies of immigrants deported from the US to Mexico.
The main ideal of the project is to understand human repercussions of mass deportation, which became common under the administration of President Donald Trump.
Research findings reveal that immigrants often suffer trauma from deportation. With this, we refer to the fact that forced displacement can often lead to episodes of anxiety, drug addiction, homelessness, depression, hopelessness, loneliness and anguish, which can cause irreversible repercussions for immigrants.
Adding to that, the project exposes, through each of the interviews and testimonies, the reasons why foreigners decide to start an immigration journey to the US. Most storytellers explain similar situations such as lack of employment opportunities in their cities or constant threat due to violence, insecurity and war.
Therefore, the project aims to closely present cases of people involved in a deportation process, so that the population can understand the real repercussions in the lives of immigrants.
