Prosecutor Sues Trump’s Government
Lawsuit against Trump’s administration
Xavier Becerra, the California prosecutor, sued Trump’s government for using the National Guard’s funds to continue building the border wall.
One of Trump’s promises during the presidential campaign was to build a border wall between Mexico and the US to prevent illegal immigration.
Reducing legal and illegal immigration has been his primary goal since he took office in 2017.
Millions of dollars have been invested in the construction of the border wall.
It is important to clarify that Bill Clinton built a portion of that wall in 1994 to curb illegal immigration as well.
Therefore, a large amount of the investment has been allocated to the reconstruction of that wall.
We are on the eve of a new presidential election in the US and Trump’s administration has not finished the wall as they promised from the beginning; so they are trying to finish it at all costs before the new elections.
What is the lawsuit based on?
The California prosecutor sued Trump’s government because he wants to divert funds from the National Guard to build the wall.
The money he wants to divert is a total of $ 3.8 billion.
The official statement declares that approximately $ 890 million from that fund was intended to protect the community in the event of natural disasters and other emergencies (such as the Coronavirus).
Xavier Becerra and 8 other prosecutors from Connecticut, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Jersey, New Mexico, Wisconsin, and Virginia joined the lawsuit.
The main argument of the lawsuit
The lawsuit states that the money invested in the wall must be used for the health emergency created by COVID-19.
Prosecutors say it is essential to take care of our citizens and invest in hospitals and medical supplies.
They also propose using that money to improve the facilities of immigrant detention centers that are in very poor condition and could become a hotbed of the virus.
The pandemic is the world’s main focus right now, and prosecutors say Trump is using that as an excuse to divert social funds for a “selfish” ideal.
The government had already diverted social funds
This is not the first time that Xavier Becerra has sued Trump’s government.
During 2019, the California prosecutor sued Trump’s administration for the same thing. At the time, he was trying to divert funds from the military to build the wall.
The US Supreme Court of Justice said the government’s actions were illegal and stopped the diversion of funds.
Trump’s administration has already had several allegations regarding the same:
- Diversion of funds from the National Security appropriations bill.
- Diversion from the Treasury Department’s drug forfeiture fund.
- Diverting funds from the Department of Defense drug interdiction program.
- Diverting funds from the Defense Department military construction account.
The President’s Response
President Trump has yet to provide a response to the lawsuit, however, the Supreme Court of Justice is already reviewing the lawsuit to provide a solution to the diversion of funds.
