Protection for Undocumented Immigrants during Vaccination Program – NY Gov.
NY Governor accuses the Trump administration of collecting personal information amid vaccination program
The pioneers of our time are undoubtedly healthcare professionals. With this, we refer not only to physicians and nurses, but also to scientific researchers, who have worked tirelessly to find an antidote to COVID-19, the virus that unleashed a global pandemic, and apart from the health crisis, also brought an economic, social and even political crisis.
After more than 10 months of exhaustive research, health experts created two efficient vaccines, which, in fact, are already being distributed in the US. However, even though there is a light at the end of the tunnel, there is considerable uncertainty among several communities such as undocumented immigrants and low-income citizens.

In fact, several government officials and representatives have raised their voices for the most vulnerable immigrant communities during the federal government’s vaccination program, especially those undocumented, who are essential workers.
For instance, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo has always tried to protect undocumented foreigners from strict policies of the Trump administration and federal entities in charge of immigration enforcement.
In early November 2020, since the US began planning its vaccination program against COVID-19, Governor Cuomo accused the Trump administration of wanting to collect personal information through medical records to deport undocumented immigrants.

NY Governor sends letter to HHS to protect undocumented immigrants during vaccination sessions
To protect the well-being and future of undocumented immigrants in the US, Governor Cuomo, along with several activist groups, sent a letter to the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) in early December.
NY Governor states that HHS needs to create a strategy to protect the most vulnerable communities. This includes, but is not limited to:
- Undocumented immigrants, who, for the most part, are essential to overcome the current crisis.
- Low-income citizens.
- Black communities.
- Asian communities.
Cuomo assures that these communities are normally excluded from medical services for multiple reasons, but that the global coronavirus pandemic excludes no one and for the vaccination program to be effective, the US must include all local residents without jeopardizing their migratory status.
Groups involved in the letter state that if HHS, with the approval of the federal government, does not distribute the COVID-19 vaccine equitably, that would only lead to a social crisis on top of the pre-existing sanitary emergency.
Therefore, they propose that if personal information is collected during vaccination sessions, there should be an agreement that bans immigration entities from obtaining these personal details and avoiding deportation proceedings.
In fact, Governor Cuomo states: “I’m also concerned that by asking for personal information, undocumented immigrants could be dissuaded from taking the vaccine (…) it would jeopardize both their health and the efficacy of the entire vaccination program. “
