Protests in Front of ICE Immigration Detention Center
The situation worsens in ICE detention centers
The Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agency (ICE) is one of the entities in charge of protecting the borders and supervising immigration detention centers around the US.
Since the massive outbreak of Coronavirus hit the North American territory, hundreds of immigrant rights advocates have warned about the imminent risk within immigration detention centers.
In late March, multiple activists stated that:
- Due to strict policies of the Trump government, immigration detention centers are overcrowded and that increases the risk of a massive outbreak within ICE facilities.
- There is not enough space for social distancing, which is the most important recommendation by the World Health Organization (WHO).
- There are dozens of testimonies from detained immigrants that state that ICE employees do not follow hygiene or safety protocols.
- They do not always have access to soap, toilets in adequate hygiene conditions, or showers.
- There are immigrants who have underlying health conditions that make them more likely to get the COVID-19 and have severe health complications.
- There are not enough medical personnel within ICE facilities to assist in a health emergency.
Therefore, currently, the number of people infected with Coronavirus in immigration detention centers grows exponentially and unstoppable.

Colorado protests against ICE center conditions
Over the past few weeks, dozens of activists have protested in front of the Colorado-based Aurora Detention Center.
Activists call for the release of detained immigrants (at least during the health crisis) who pose no threat to society and who have committed no crime.
They declare that keeping innocent people detained during a global pandemic as contagious as the Coronavirus is unnecessarily risking health and life. In addition to that, they ensure that ICE can perfectly monitor immigrants remotely without the need for indefinite detention.
However, ICE has openly stated that it does not plan to release detainees unless there is an official order.
Thus, dozens of protesters have camped for weeks in front of this detention center. In fact, there are activists who have been camping in front of ICE facilities for more than a month and a half.
One of the activist is protesting because her partner is detained and she declares: “We started camping out here once we found out there was an outbreak of COVID-19 (…) We have started camping out here since May 23. Today is day 57 (…) We’re going to stay here until they free them all and we shut this down”.
In addition to that, multiple lawsuits have been filed over the past few weeks regarding conditions inside ICE detention centers and the case may go to a local court because of that.
