Protests in immigration detention centers
Immigrant rights advocates protest
Coronavirus is well known for being a constant threat for the world. However, there are certain sectors of society that are more affected by mass contagion than others.
For example, immigrants who are held in detention centers around the country are more vulnerable to a massive spread of COVID-19.
Since the outbreak of the virus reached the US, immigrant rights advocates have raised their voices and called for human rights and the release of innocent families detained.
In fact, several judges around the country have released immigrants in recent days who are vulnerable to contagion.
However, Trump’s administration has made no decision regarding the threat from immigrant detention centers and prisons around the country.
That’s why immigrant rights advocates protested from their cars in front of two Arizona detention centers.
The protests
About 100 caravan cars arrived at two detention centers in Arizona to demand the release of immigrants.
They claim that detained families pose no threat to society and that it is unfair to put them at risk during the country’s health crisis.
The reason they decided to protest is because there are already several confirmed cases of Coronavirus in immigration detention centers around the country. The virus spreads very fast and is almost unstoppable when there are conglomerations.
Detention centers are usually overcrowded and there is not enough space for social distancing. Therefore, the risk of massive contagion is greater than normal.
In these centers there are immigrants of all ages and they do not have medical supplies to meet the needs of detainees.
One of the advocates of a human rights movement stated during the protest: “We demand that ICE release the detainees, starting with the most vulnerable.”
Immigrant rights advocates want to avoid a catastrophe in detention centers. They demand the freedom of innocent families who just want to build a brighter future in the US.
They claim that if we do not act now, the massive outbreak will be unstoppable and that would represent the death of hundreds of innocent people, including federal workers at the centers of the Immigration and Customs Enforcement Service (ICE).
Detained immigrants await response for their cases
In addition to that, most detained immigrants are waiting for a hearing regarding their cases.
However, the US Citizenship and Immigration Service (USCIS) has suspended in-person services, which means that detained families must wait even longer than normal to receive a response to their immigration cases.
Therefore, advocates request the release of detained immigrants even if it is temporarily, while the peak of contagion decreases in the country.
Protests around the country
The car caravan protest took place in Arizona, however hundreds of lawsuits have been filed around the country claiming the release of the detained immigrants.
Multiple judges in the US have joined the cause and claimed for the health of families unjustly detained during the Coronavirus outbreak.
They also declare imminent risk to federal employees who are legal citizens and who have families they must protect as well.
