Information on admission reactivation
According to the DOS representative’s statement, the temporary halt to refugee admissions was related to the arrival of approximately 80,000 evacuees from Afghanistan.
Due to the limited headquarters and staffing of refugee resettlement agencies, the freeze was intended to focus officials’ efforts to place newly arrived Afghans in a short period of time.
After resettling nearly 55,000 Afghan refugees, the DOS announced that, as of January 11, 2021, it would resume admitting refugees from other countries.

More refugee admissions in the Biden administration
In October 2021, the Biden administration sent Congress a proposal to increase the annual refugee cap. Thus, for fiscal year 2022, which began in October 2021, the refugee cap is 125,000.
This is a significant expansion of the number of admissions considering that, during the Trump Administration, only 15,000 to 18,000 refugees were admitted annually, the lowest number in recent history.
