Report: Biden Should Optimize DACA Application Processing
The USCIS is currently accepting new DACA applications
The USCIS (US Citizenship and Immigration Services) has been receiving new DACA applications since December 2020, when a New York judge ordered then-President Donald Trump’s administration to reinstate this immigration benefit with its original guidelines, that is, those outlined by the Obama administration.
DACA, Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, is a program available to young immigrants known as Dreamers, who were brought to the US without legal documentation when they were minors. This immigration benefit offers them protection from deportation for two years with the possibility of extension. Adding to that, DACA recipients can apply for employment authorization and access other social services.
However, former President Trump, who led the White House from 2017 to 2021, never agreed to offer legal options to undocumented immigrants and thus tried to eradicate DACA by any means possible. After a seemingly endless battle, the Trump administration had to reinstate this immigration program.

Thousands of DACA applications still in limbo
Although this event was a relief for Dreamers covered by this program, there are still thousands of young immigrants in limbo, who meet the eligibility requirements to become DACA recipients, but who have been affected by a saturated immigration system.
In fact, official figures show that approximately 50,000 Dreamers have submitted their initial DACA applications since December 2020 and only 1.5% have been adjudicated. In other words, the USCIS has processed fewer than 800 DACA applications in more than six months.

The Biden administration should streamline the DACA process
According to a recent Chicago Sun Times report, there should be no excuse for the Biden administration to have done nothing to streamline and expedite DACA application processing, especially when it comes to Dreamers who meet eligibility requirements and who have lived in the US since they were approximately 7 years old.
At this point it is important to explain that, even before winning the 2020 election, President Joe Biden openly supported Dreamers and stated that his administration would do everything possible to offer them a path to lawful permanent residence and eventually citizenship.
However, the Biden administration has not pursued any strategy, other than its immigration bill, to streamline the processing of DACA applications within USCIS. It is clear that this immigration agency is not being able to cope with the number of immigration applications of all kinds, and therefore it is important that the Biden administration step in to improve existing processes and protect eligible Dreamers.
