Report comments on Biden and Trump border policies

The Bipartisan Policy Center recently released a report analyzing the major differences between border policies implemented under the Trump administration and those implemented under the Biden administration.

Clearly, because former President Trump and President Biden have almost diametrically opposed views when it comes to the immigration sector in general, there have been fairly prominent changes in border policies between these two administrations.

Let’s take a look at some important policies:

The MPP policy

Under Trump

In 2019, the Trump administration implemented the MPP (Migrant Protection Protocols) or “Remain in Mexico” policy, which, as the name implies, forced hundreds of thousands of asylum seekers to remain in Mexican territory while they received a response to their immigration applications.

Under Biden

During his first days in office, Biden suspended the MPP program and later permanently rescinded it, stating that it goes against the US’ values.

However, in August 2021, a federal judge ordered the Biden administration to reinstate the MPP policy, a decision that was upheld by the Supreme Court.

The border wall

Under Trump

One of the pillars of Trump’s political campaign was the idea of building a border wall between the US and Mexico to curb mass irregular migration. His administration managed to build approximately 47 miles of border wall, although he had promised it would be 800 miles.

Under Biden

As one of his first actions as president of the US, Biden signed a presidential proclamation ordering the immediate termination of Trump’s border wall construction, explaining that there are other environmentally friendly and less invasive alternatives to address irregular migration.

Title 42

Under Trump

Beginning in early 2020, the Trump administration used Title 42 to carry out express deportations in the midst of the health crisis caused by the global Coronavirus pandemic.

This expansive US Code statute allows certain federal entities to implement unconventional measures, such as expedited removals, in light of emergencies that put public health at risk.

Under Biden

The Biden administration has also used Title 42 so far in 2021, allowing it to turn back hundreds of thousands of migrants almost immediately amid the surge of illegal border crossings.

ACAs

Under Trump

Between 2017 and early 2021, the Trump administration created several ACAs (Asylum Cooperation Agreements) with neighboring countries to reduce the number of political asylum claims in the US, allowing it to send asylum seekers to other countries to file their cases there.

The controversy surrounding these agreements is that many of the countries that agreed to have ACAs with the US are third world countries that do not have the resources necessary to protect the integrity of asylum seekers.

Under Biden

In early February 2021, the Biden administration suspended the ACAs established by the Trump administration with the Northern Triangle of Central America (Guatemala, El Salvador, and Honduras).
