Report – The Importance of Undocumented Immigrants to the Economy
The Trump administration’s battle against undocumented immigrants
The political identity of the current president of the US, Donald Trump, is strongly related to the ideal of reducing immigration, mainly illegal. His administration has tried, by all means, to increase protection at the borders to curb the massive flow of undocumented immigrants and reduce benefits for those who managed to cross the borders without prior authorization and currently reside in the US.
According to the opinion of the president and his cabinet, foreigners who cross borders without legal documentation are violating local law and:
- Should face criminal prosecution.
- Should not be taken into account for the allocation of federal funds of each state.
- Local companies should not hire them as it diminishes job opportunities for American workers.
- Should not receive social or government benefits in the US, nor options to obtain legal residence or citizenship.
Thus, over the past four years, the Trump administration has used several federal entities such as Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to reduce illegal immigration, increase operations to detain undocumented immigrants across the US and initiate massive deportation proceedings.
However, despite Trump’s attempt to reduce immigration under the premise of protecting the local population, dozens of studies and reports reveal that the current government’s opinion does not concord with official figures and that the impact of immigrant communities, including those undocumented, on the economy and social development is tremendously important and necessary.
Adding to that, the Trump administration’s investment to “teach a lesson” to undocumented immigrants is too high and affects taxpayers, which are, American citizens.
Report reveals that undocumented workers contribute to economic development
The Center for American Progress (CAP) recently released a report called “Protecting Undocumented Workers on the Pandemic’s Front Lines,” which exposes the role of millions of undocumented immigrants in the battle against the Coronavirus and the economic recovery of the US.
CAP exposes several important facts, let’s look at some of them:
- There are currently approximately 10.4 million undocumented immigrants in the US.
- An estimated 7 million undocumented immigrants are currently working.
- Undocumented immigrants represent 4.4% of the total workforce, but they are only 3.2% of the local population, which means that their contribution to the economy is quite relevant.
- Undocumented immigrants often work in important sectors such as healthcare, the US food supply chain, agriculture, cleaning services, construction, and more.
- 5 million undocumented immigrants are essential workers in the battle against the global pandemic.
- Most undocumented immigrants, hoping to apply for legal documentation, pay annual taxes and contribute greatly to the economy.
Therefore, CAP concludes that foreign workforce, regardless of immigration status, is essential for the country to overcome the economic crisis brought by the global COVID-19 pandemic.
As Democratic nominee Joe Biden will be the next president of the US, CAP states: “Because of the critical role undocumented immigrants play contributing to the American economy, the report recommends that the Biden administration and Congress provide them with a path to legal status.”
