Report: Undocumented Immigrant Population is Decreasing
Undocumented Immigrant Communities are Shrinking
The results of the 2020 National Census have revealed many prominent changes in national economic behavior, population growth and the local workforce. It is important to explain that the National Census is conducted every 10 years and is intended to, among many other things, measure population growth and socioeconomic development, allocate federal funds, and distribute seats in Congress based on the population density of each state.
It is worth clarifying that all residents of the US must participate in the National Census. This means that immigration status does not affect participation in the Census and the results also serve to measure levels of irregular migration.
Speaking specifically about this issue, a recent report by the Center for Migration Studies shows that the 2020 National Census results reveal that the undocumented foreigner population shrank considerably between 2010 and 2019.
In 2010, there were an estimated 11.73 million immigrants residing in the US undocumented, while, in 2019, this number dropped to 10.35 million. This represents a decrease of 11.76%.
Adding to that, it is also important to note that, among those 10.35 million undocumented immigrants reported in 2019:
- Most importantly, 96% are employed, that is, they are part of the US’ workforce.
- 3.9 million, or 38%, are parents of American citizens.
- 59% have good or very good English language proficiency.
- 16% are married to an American citizen or lawful permanent resident.

Positive news in relation to the border situation
Currently, there is a gigantic social controversy related to a surge of illegal border crossings, which is delaying the Biden administration’s immigration plans. In fact, there is much conjecture among the American population regarding undocumented immigrants and their impact on society.
For instance, opposition groups and several political leaders, who do not support Biden’s immigration ideals, claim that undocumented foreigners are spreading the Coronavirus in the border territory, that the local crime rate has increased due to the surge of illegal crossings, and that the current administration opened the US borders in the midst of a health crisis, which is not entirely the case.
It is important to understand that these assertions rarely come from reliable sources or corroborative figures. Therefore, the fact that the 2020 National Census reveals that undocumented immigrant communities have been declining over the last decade is a fact that could change the American population’s view regarding undocumented foreigners.
