Republican Governors Call on Biden to Protect the Borders
Trump’s border wall and policies
Between 2017 and early 2021, former President Trump’s administration was in a constant fight to reduce immigration levels in the US, both legal and illegal.
In fact, one of the most striking aspects of Donald Trump’s political campaign was his ideal of curbing mass irregular migration by building a border wall separating the US from Mexico.
During his term, former President Trump managed to build and rebuild a considerable portion of the border wall, but fell short of his promise to cover all 800 miles of border territory.
Aside from the wall, the Trump administration implemented a series of policies that substantially restricted alternatives available to undocumented foreigners and significantly increased deportation levels in the US.
It is worth mentioning that, just before leaving office, former President Trump expedited the construction of the border wall in late 2020.

Biden does not support the border wall or Trump’s immigration policies
Since Biden launched his political campaign for the November 2020 elections, he stated that he did not agree with restrictive policies such as building a wall in the border territory, arguing that not only was it an arbitrary measure, but it also affected the local ecosystem and left vulnerable communities in dire need of international protection in limbo.
In fact, one of Biden’s first actions as President of the US was to issue a Presidential Proclamation ordering his team to immediately halt construction of the border wall.
Naturally and predictably, the Biden administration has felt constant pressure from certain political leaders and opposition groups, who state that the surge of illegal border crossings is taking place because the current president abruptly lifted Trump’s restrictions and halted the construction of the border wall.

Republican Governors ask Biden to resume border wall construction
On Wednesday, October 6, 10 Republican governors traveled to the border territory, where, at a press conference, they openly called on the Biden administration to be tougher when it comes to the surge of illegal border crossings and to adopt the policies necessary to curb mass irregular migration and protect local populations.
The governors introduced an action plan and ask Biden to review and implement it as soon as possible. Among other things, the governors propose to:
- Invest federal funds to effectively address human and drug trafficking.
- Send National Guard troops to the border territory.
- Resume the border wall construction.
- Deport all immigrants who have committed or participated in crimes, even if they are misdemeanors.
- Permanently implement the “Remain in Mexico” policy for asylum seekers.
