Republicans Do Not Support Immigration Reform due to “Border Crisis”

Is Republican support really related to the border situation?

Republican members do not support immigration reform

The Biden-Harris administration has high expectations when it comes to the immigration sector and hopes to restructure the entire immigration system through comprehensive reform. However, in order to officially implement certain immigration laws, the current administration of the US needs approval from Congress, both the House of Representatives and the Senate.

Currently, there is a fairly wide division among members of Congress (Republicans vs. Democrats) regarding Biden’s immigration plans, especially his comprehensive immigration bill, which would substantially change the federal government’s approach to immigration over the next four years.

For Biden’s bill to become law, his administration needs 10 Republican votes in the Senate. However, most Republican members have openly stated that they do not plan to even consider Biden’s immigration proposals until his administration controls the current border situation, which has been labeled a “border crisis”.

With this, Republican members refer to a surge of illegal border crossings that has taken place mainly after President Biden took office at the end of January, which is not entirely dependent on his policies, but is also related to situations inherent to the Central American territory.

Irregular migration never has positive repercussions, but on the contrary, it could risk your future in the US. Therefore, the best alternative is to seek reliable help when starting your immigration process and always follow legal guidelines. Is Republican support really related to the border situation?

According to a recent report by America’s Voice, even though the Biden administration has already substantially improved the border situation and is carrying out multiple strategies and action plans (with Vice President Harris leading the projects), certain Republican members of Congress still do not support Biden’s immigration plans.

America’s Voice openly states that “Republican leaders have repeatedly said that they would not cooperate with Democrats on immigration reform because of a so-called “border crisis.” But now that the Biden-Harris administration has made dramatic progress on addressing the disastrous border situation they inherited, Republicans are still unwilling to make a deal on issues”.

Thus, the Biden administration may have to find other means or executive action to implement some of its immigration policies, although it still hopes to gain bipartisan support in Congress rather than use other legal resources to improve the immigration system.

In fact, it is important to clarify that President Biden has always emphasized the need to modify existing immigration policies, not to affect the American population, but precisely to support local businesses when there is a shortage of skilled workforce and to protect the most vulnerable communities.

It is worth mentioning that the US is currently at a crossroads as the National Census results reveal that the country had the lowest population growth in 8 decades between 2010 and 2020. Therefore, to protect and keep the economy afloat, the country needs to expand immigration, that is the most effective strategy.
