Democratic leaders’ immigration proposals
So far, Democratic leaders have modified the immigration provisions in the budget package three times, all of which have been rejected by the Senate Parliamentarian.
Let’s take a look at the Democratic leaders’ proposals:
- The primary goal of Democratic leaders has always been to open a path to citizenship for all immigrants residing in the US undocumented, a number that hovers around 11 million. The Senate Parliamentarian rejected this proposal in early September.
- The second attempt by Democratic leaders proposed updating the Registry Provision in order to offer Green Cards to undocumented immigrants who have resided in the country for a specified period of time. The Senate Parliamentarian rejected this proposal in late September.
- The third proposal by Democratic leaders sought to expand the parole power to offer temporary amnesty (up to 10 years) to approximately 7 million undocumented foreign workers and issue unused Green Cards for the past 3 decades. The Senate Parliamentarian rejected this proposal on December 16.
