Senate Still Must Review Several Immigration Bills
Current immigration bills
The US immigration system went through a series of rather prominent changes under Donald Trump’s term, who led the White House from January 2017 to January 2021. Most of Trump’s policies on immigration sought to reduce alternatives available to immigrant communities, narrow legal immigration programs, and increase eligibility requirements for foreigners to come to the country or extend their residence permits.
Now that there is another administration leading the nation, immigrant communities, along with activist groups, immigrant rights advocates, and even members of the government are hoping for radical change and comprehensive immigration reform.
In fact, since President Joe Biden took office in late January 2021, several members of Congress and other members of the government have introduced or reintroduced different immigration bills that, if passed, would substantially transform the immigration sector and would adopt more humane policies compared to those used by the previous administration.

Senate must review immigration bills recently passed by the House
Among the recently introduced immigration bills, there are two that have already been approved by the US House of Representatives. One of them would offer a path to legal residence to eligible Dreamers, who are young immigrants who came to the country as minors, and beneficiaries of deportation relief programs such as TPS (Temporary Protected Status) or DED (Deferred Enforced Departure). The other would offer a path to legal residence to undocumented farmworkers.
To understand the issue at hand, it is important to clarify that for an immigration bill to officially become law, it must be approved by both branches of Congress, the House of Representatives and the Senate. Therefore, the Senate has yet to review these immigration bills, which would definitely change the future of certain immigrant communities in the US.

Senate intervention is essential to reform the immigration system
The Biden administration’s goal is to reform the entire immigration system. However, from what we have seen throughout history regarding the immigration sector, it is quite evident that the executive power of the president and his team goes up to a certain point, but the support of Congress is needed to approve and legitimize more comprehensive proposals, projects or plans and to promote a new approach to immigration, with a system that adapts to the current global needs without neglecting human rights.
Therefore, Senate intervention is absolutely essential to pass or reject pending immigration bills. Adding to that, there is currently growing controversy surrounding the immigration sector and the Senate’s decision on this dilemma could also allow the Biden administration to continue with its immigration plans.
