Senators Meet to Discuss Immigration Policies
Bipartisan Senators Discuss Immigration
After several weeks in which the immigration sector has been in the eye of the storm, a group of bipartisan senators (Democrats and Republicans) discussed immigration in a meeting convened on Wednesday, March 24, 2021. During this meeting organized by Senate Majority Whip, Democrat Richard Durbin (known as Dick Durbin), senators mainly discussed immigration proposals that would lead to comprehensive reform.
However, the main reason for Durbin to convene this group of Senators was to discuss about the current border situation in contrast to Biden’s immigration proposals, essentially his immigration bill, which is quite broad. To better understand the issue at hand, it is important to clarify that border entities such as the CBP (Customs and Border Protection), which are in charge of preventing any illicit activity at the US borders, have reported a growing number of undocumented immigrant apprehensions over the past 8 weeks, including unaccompanied immigrant minors.
The controversy surrounding the immigration sector is so great that it is the first time that this group of Senators has met to review the current administration’s immigration policies in an unofficial session. According to the testimony of several attendees, the Senate does not plan to approve immigration reform if the Biden administration does not implement policies and measures to address the current situation at the US borders and curb irregular immigration from Central America.

The Senate still has to review several immigration proposals
This meeting came after, not only the surge of illegal border crossings, but also after the US House of Representatives passed two immigration bills that would offer a path to legal permanent residence for certain eligible undocumented immigrants:
- The so-called Dreamers, who are young immigrants who came to the US without legal documentation when they were minors.
- Beneficiaries of two deportation relief programs, TPS (Temporary Protected Status) and DED (Deferred Enforced Departure).
- Undocumented farmworkers.
Since any immigration bill must be approved by both branches of Congress, the Senate has yet to decide on these two proposals for them to become law.
However, after the bipartisan Senators meeting, the Biden administration may have to first control the situation at the borders and mitigate the impact of illegal immigration, before the Senate supports comprehensive immigration reform.
